New York City, 12/6/2011—Parents to Improve School Transportation (PIST), Coalition for Educational Justice, and Class Size Matters participated in a press conference today in support of school bus drivers, escorts and mechanics of ATU 1181-1061. There was also a showing from ATU members and leaders, along with other transport unions, the Public Advocate’s office, and some City Council members.
Union President Michael Cordiello is sending a letter home to parents this week. He guarantees no strike during the already-stressful holiday season, and urges us to call the Mayor and Chancellor to let them know we want trained, experienced people with good union contracts handling our children of all ages on every yellow bus. We will post and send this electronically when we get it in file form.
PIST will forward information we receive about any upcoming contract negotiation rallies that parents and the community can support to help pre-empt a short term crisis such as a work action and especially a long term crisis like the devaluing of school transportation for years to come!
