Quito, Jul 26 (Prensa Latina) - The Ecuadorian government will announce its decision regarding the political asylum requested by the Wikileaks founder, Julian Assange, after the Olympic Games to begin tomorrow in London.
As stated by Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patiño, the decision should not affect relations with Great Britain, and though it might be a different position than that of the British government, he said.
We will be prudent in order not to affect the Olympic Games, said Patiño, and he added that Assange is fine; he celebrated his birthday a few days ago.
He also said that Ecuador has already established some contacts among its diplomatic representation and Swedish representatives.
Since last June 19, Assange remains in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London to avoid being extradited to Sweden, where he is accused of four alleged sexual assaults, none of which has been proven.
Assange is also investigated by the U.S.A. for alleged espionage, because his organization released thousands of confidential diplomatic cables of the U.S. State Department.
For this reason, the Wikileaks founder fears that in case of being extradited to Sweden, he might be sent to the U.S.A. and sentenced to life imprisonment or to death.
