Confirmation hearings for Commissioner Anthony Batts begin at 5 P.M.
TELL THE MAYOR: The community is outraged that Commissioner Batts was chosen without any input from civil rights groups, unions, or community representatives. Instead a small group of outside business interests were consulted. We are seriously concerned about Batts former record as police commissioner of Oakland where he failed to implement federally mandated changes designed to curb police abuses. We demand Community Control Now!
AND LET’S TELL COMMISSIONER ANTHONY BATTS: That the people of Baltimore will not tolerate continued police abuses in our community including: the abysmal rate of police killings and terror; racial and class profiling; the reports of women being illegally stripped searched in the streets; beatings and kidnappings; the reports of drugs being planted on people; false arrests; and the refusal to return people’s rightful property.
Many of the police who have been involved in these abuses and crimes are simply recycled to other districts. We demand their immediate firing and that they be charged with the crimes they have committed.
