Only thus can he be considered a Communist.

Mariela Castro, director of the National Sexual Education Center, stressed that there is political willingness in Cuba to defend the sexual rights of all citizens.

“We are working to change consciousness and legitimize those rights. Laws do not guarantee human rights on their own; they must be backed by political will, but above all by a transformation in social consciousness,” she said.

Community panels, marches, theatrical plays, and cultural galas celebrating respect for diversity are platforms that help bring people closer to that reality, which touches everyone, whether in the neighborhood or within their own family.

It was on this date that the General Assembly of the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and other Health Problems.

“It’s always hard to tell for sure exactly when a revolution starts,” wrote John Tierny in The Atlantic recently. “I’m not an expert on revolutions,” he continued, “but even I can see that a new one is taking shape in American K-12 public education.”

In the piece titled, “The Coming Revolution in Public Education,” Tierney pointed to a number of signs:

*Teachers refusing to give standardized tests, parents opting their kids out of tests, and students boycotting tests.

*Legislators reconsidering testing and expressing concerns about corruption in the testing industry.

*Voucher and other “choice” proposals being strongly contested and voted down in states that had been friendly to them.

Resistance is particularly vehement in low-income communities of color in large urban school districts where reform measures have lead to widespread teacher firings and school closings. In Chicago, Philadelphia, New York City, Cleveland, and Detroit, vocal protestors have been organizing in their own communities but also uniting in national campaigns, such as this year’s Journey for Justice effort that brought hundreds of activists in allied grassroots organizations to the White House to protest school closings.

Unlike school reform proponents who benefit from massive donations from rich foundations and politically connected funders, grassroots groups leading the resistance – like the Alliance for Educational Justice and Alliance for Quality Education – have far humbler means and few connections to the political class and deep pocketed philanthropists like Bill Gates.

Black Panther Newspaper Van

From Bill Jennings:

“Andrew Austin used to drive this van, it was like a old milk truck. It had Black Community News Service on one side and a big Black Panther on the other. Andrew drove this van and I would see it in the parking lot of my apartment building.

“One day I saw someone getting out of it and it was Lauren, Andrew’s wife. Lauren told me to come by around 8 pm and he would be home. So I went over and Charles Bursey opened the door, they were just finishing reading the Red Book. Long story short, Charles gave me a Red Book on my way out the door and said read this, and if you want to go to a BPP rally be ready at 10am Saturday. Andrew and Charles took me to my first BPP rally in July 1968.

“Shortly after that 7 or 8 party members were busted in that van when Bill Brent pulled a gun at a local gas station. They impounded the van.”

Jorge Rafael Videla, Jailed Argentine Military Leader, Dies at 87

Jorge Rafael Videla, Jailed Argentine Military Leader, Dies at 87:
Jorge Rafael Videla, the military junta leader who oversaw a ruthless campaign of political killings and forced disappearances duringArgentina’s so-called Dirty War against dissidents in the mid-1970s, died on Friday in the Marcos Paz Prison in Buenos Aires, where he was serving a life sentence for crimes against humanity. He was 87.

At least 15,000 people were killed or “disappeared” during the junta’s campaign, according to government estimates. Human rights officials say the figure is closer to 30,000.

General Videla rose to power in 1976, when he led a largely bloodless coup against President Isabel Martínez de Perón, widow of Juan Domingo Perón, the founder of the country’s populist movement. Whisked away by helicopter in the dead of night, Mrs. Perón was arrested and charged with corruption, and General Videla, the chief of the armed forces, took over the presidency and established a military junta, promising to restore civilian rule promptly.

Instead he declared as a priority the “eradication” of the leftist guerrillas who had begun a fierce offensive against Mrs. Perón’s government. The junta’s net soon widened to include lawyers, students, journalists and union leaders suspected of ties to radical groups. Congress was suspended, political parties were abolished, strikes were made illegal and death squads roamed the country.

Good riddance to this fascist pal of Wall Street and Pope Francis.

Today in history: May 17, 2011 - Los Angeles County SWAT team...

Today in history: May 17, 2011 - Los Angeles County SWAT team and the FBI raid the home of long-time Chicano movement leader Carlos Montes as part of FBI-directed repression against anti-war and international solidarity activists. They crashed his door down at 5:00 a.m., with automatic assault rifles drawn, almost killing him. After arresting him, an FBI agent tried to question Montes about his political affiliations.

Facing 6 serious felonies with a possible prison time of up to 18 years, a national campaign was launched to drop the charges against Carlos Montes. The campaign resulted in victory — Carlos didn’t go to prison and has continued his work fighting for immigrant rights, education rights, Chicano liberation, and an end to political repression and U.S. wars and occupations.
There is no reason to believe that the United States has any genuine interest in protecting Syrians from chemical weapons attacks. Washington dismissed out of hand evidence presented by the United Nations that the rebels used sarin gas, which is hardly what a government would do were it genuinely keen on protecting all Syrians from chemical attack, no matter which side of the conflict they’re on.

Significantly, US regime change policy in Syria antedates Syria’s civil war. The outbreak of the “Arab Spring” in Syria, and Damascus’s response to it, didn’t start the ball rolling on US efforts to force Assad from power. US regime change policy, linked to Damascus’s refusal to become a “peace-partner” with Israel, its alliance with Iran and Hezbollah, and its refusal to fully open its economy to US capital, existed long before the Syrian government cracked down on opposition forces. In fact, one element of US foreign policy was to encourage opposition to the Assad government, that is, to foment the kind of civil unrest that eventually morphed into a full blown civil war.

Multi-party representative democracy, a tolerant attitude to dissent, and eschewal of chemical weapons, have not been relevant components of US foreign policy decision making. They have instead served as stalking horses behind which lurk the commercial and financial interests of Western banks, investors and corporations.

Los Angeles: Class and Discussion on Paris Commune of 1871

Los Angeles: Class and Discussion on Paris Commune of 1871:
Friday, May 17 - 7pm to 9pm

Harriet Tubman Center for Social Justice, 5278 West Pico Blvd, Los Angeles

142 years ago the workers of Paris took over the city and launched the world’s first workers’ state. The commune lasted 2 1/2 months and although it was drowned in blood when the German capitalist class united with the French bosses, the experience of the Commune validated the theory of class struggle and gave birth to many components of workers’ states that emerged later in history. Join with Workers World activists and others for a brief presentation and open discussion on this amazing development in workers’ history.

NYC Forum: Poor People’s March & Hands Off...

NYC Forum: Poor People’s March & Hands Off Assata

The State Department, still with “egg on its face” from its statement that Keystone XL would have little impact on climate change, sunk a little lower today as the most respected elders, and chiefs of 10 sovereign nations turned their backs on State Department representatives and walked out during a meeting.

The statement released by the tribal elders is below:

On this historic day of May 16, 2013, ten sovereign Indigenous nations maintain that the proposed TransCanada/Keystone XL pipeline does not serve the national interest and in fact would be detrimental not only to the collected sovereigns but all future generations on planet earth. This morning the following sovereigns informed the Department of State Tribal Consultation effort at the Hilton Garden Inn in Rapid City, SD, that the gathering was not recognized as a valid consultation on a “nation to nation” level:

Southern Ponca
Pawnee Nation
Nez Perce Nation

And the following Oceti Sakowin (Seven Council Fires People):

Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate
Ihanktonwan Dakota (Yankton Sioux)
Rosebud Sioux Tribe
Oglala Sioux Tribe
Standing Rock Tribe
Lower Brule Sioux Tribe
Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe
Crow Creek Sioux Tribe

The Great Plains Tribal Chairmans Association supports this position, which is in solidarity with elected leaders, Treaty Councils and the grassroots community, and is guided by spiritual leaders. On Saturday, May 18, the Sacred Pipe Bundle of the Oceti Sakowin will be brought out to pray with the people to stop the KXL pipeline, and other tribal nation prayer circles will gather to do the same.

Pursuant to Executive Order 13175, the above sovereigns directed the DOS to invite President Obama to engage in “true Nation to Nation” consultation with them at the nearest date, at a designated location to be communicated by each of the above sovereigns. After delivering that message, the large contingent of tribal people walked out of the DOS meeting and asked the other tribal people present to support this effort and to leave the meeting. Eventually all remaining tribal representatives and Tribal Historic Preservation Officers left the meeting at the direct urging of the grassroots organization Owe Aku. Owe Aku, Moccasins on the Ground, and Protect the Sacred are preparing communities to resist the Keystone XL pipeline through Keystone Blockade Training.

This unprecedented unity of tribes against the desecration of Ina Maka (Mother Earth) was motivated by the signing on January 25, 2013, of the historic International Treaty to Protect the Sacred Against the Tar Sands. Signatories were the Pawnee Nation, the Ponca Nation, the Ihanktonwan Dakota and the Oglala Lakota. Since then ten First Nations Chiefs in Canada have signed the Treaty to protect themselves against tar sands development in Canada.

The above sovereigns notify President Obama to consult with each of them because of the following:

The nations have had no direct role in identifying and evaluating cultural resources.

The nations question the status of the programmatic agreement and how it may or may not be amended.

The nations are deeply concerned about potential pipeline impacts on natural resources, especially our water: potential spills and leaks, groundwater and surface water contamination.

The nations have no desire to contribute to climate change, to which the pipeline will directly contribute.

The nations recognize that the pipeline will increase environmental injustice, disproportionately impacting native communities.

The nations deplore the environmental impacts of tar sands mining being endured by tribes in Canada. The pipeline would service the tar sands extractive industry.

The nations insist that their treaty rights be respected⎯the pipeline would violate them.

The nations support an energy policy that promotes renewables and efficiency instead of one that features fossil fuels.

The nations regard the consultation process as flawed in favor of corporate interests.

The sovereigns of these nations contend that it is not in America’s interest to facilitate and contribute to environmental devastation on the scale caused by the extraction of tar sands in Canada. America would be better served by a comprehensive program to reduce its reliance on oil, and to invest in the development and deployment of sustainable energy technologies, such as electric vehicles that are charged using solar and wind power.

If the Keystone XL pipeline is allowed to be built, TransCanada, a Canadian corporation, would be occupying sacred treaty lands as reserved in the 1851 and 1868 Fort Laramie Treaties. It will be stopped by unified resistance.
