Elections of hope in Puerto Rico

By Berta Joubert-Ceci

The establishment parties find themselves under pressure from the emergence of Alianza de País, a progressive coalition formed by the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) and Movimiento Victoria Ciudadana (MVC). This coalition is gaining support among disaffected members of both the PPD and the PNP, who are disillusioned by the actions of their parties. The figure of Juan Dalmau, representing the PIP for governor, is perceived as a trustworthy leader capable of addressing the failures of previous administrations.

Regardless of the outcome in the governor’s race, the people have unequivocally expressed their rejection of corruption, and this time they will not stop after November 5th.

Promise of change in Puerto Rico

By Berta Joubert-Ceci

With each passing day, Puerto Rico sinks deeper into a neoliberal process that threatens its very existence. From the purely geological issue, with supposed legal approvals for construction in coastal locations that involve the removal of mangroves and corals that are the natural barriers against coastal erosion, to the displacement of communities that give way to luxury housing for millionaire foreigners. There is a replacement of our population.

Urgent measures are needed such as the removal of the corrupt, neoliberal and right-wing administration in the government represented by the New Progressive Party (PNP) that aspires to make PUR a U.S. state. However, it also has its collaborators in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who favor the colonial situation.

To remove them, there is a chance in the upcoming November 5 elections. Despite the prohibitions of the right wing, an electoral alliance has been formed between two progressive forces, the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) and the Movimiento Victoria Ciudadana.

We are witnessing the deepening of a colonial process through neoliberalism by the United States in Puerto Rico that, if not stopped now, will completely displace the native population to create another entity with the substitution of our population … to the point of no return. They did it to Hawaii and Alaska. We don’t want it to happen in Borikén!

It has been more than a month since the General Central of Workers of Puerto Rico has been on strike against the Peruvian capitalist association Grupo Gloria, which manages the dairy processing company Suiza Dairy (SD) here. This is one of the three milk processing companies in this country that together represent one of the few remaining native food industries.

At the time of publication, it was reported that the PR Police’ Tactical Unit Force had arrested 16 protesters in front of the gates of the Suiza Dairy to make way for the strikebreakers.

We should not be surprised that in a colony, it is corporations, law firms, and gringo millionaires who finance these campaigns to maintain the unjust laws that grant preferences to foreign investors, such as Law 60, which makes Puerto Rico a tax haven. They have come to Puerto Rico to steal our land, build luxury buildings and homes for short-term rentals, displacing communities and driving up housing prices, making it so that a middle-income family can no longer afford an affordable residence.
