50 years ago, September 11, 1974, the Weather Underground bombed the Oakland office of the Anaconda mining company in retaliation for their “decisive role in the US-sponsored fascist coup in Chile” one year earlier, after the socialist Allende government nationalized copper mines.

While carrying out the struggle here with the deepest-felt sympathy for all victims of the coup, it is also the responsibility of the working class leaders to explain to the advanced elements the disastrous consequences of the policies of Allende and the parties in the Popular Unity (UP) coalition, particularly the Communist Party.
The revolutionary cadres in Chile must rebuild, reconstitute themselves, and create a transition to socialism built on reality, on the armed working class. We look forward and pledge ourselves to building a movement in solidarity with the resistance movement in Chile. In the heartland of the imperialist culprits, that is our duty.

Hundreds of people gathered in New York City’s Union Square on Oct. 26 to demand that Chilean President Sebastián Piñera resign. The billionaire Piñera has had his army and police kill at least 19 people, with hundreds injured and thousands arrested. The metropolitan area of Chile’s capital Santiago has been under a state of siege.
Most of the people who came to Union Square were from New York’s Chilean community. Many were young, others were veterans of the struggle against the Pinochet dictatorship. The crowd sang songs by martyred Chilean poet/singer/songwriter Victor Jara, murdered in the U.S.-backed coup of Sept. 11, 1973. They also sang El Pueblo Unido, the anthem of the Popular Unity government of Salvador Allende, also martyred with thousands of his supporters in Washington’s coup.
The flag of the Mapuche Indigenous nation of southern Chile was carried by many in the crowd. Activists from Honduras, Mexico and Brazil also carried their flags in support.
Today is the 46th anniversary of the U.S.-orchestrated coup against Chile’s popularly elected socialist government. At least 60,000 people were killed as a result.
