While carrying out the struggle here with the deepest-felt sympathy for all victims of the coup, it is also the responsibility of the working class leaders to explain to the advanced elements the disastrous consequences of the policies of Allende and the parties in the Popular Unity (UP) coalition, particularly the Communist Party.

The revolutionary cadres in Chile must rebuild, reconstitute themselves, and create a transition to socialism built on reality, on the armed working class. We look forward and pledge ourselves to building a movement in solidarity with the resistance movement in Chile. In the heartland of the imperialist culprits, that is our duty.

On Feb. 1, 1998, we lost comrade Sam Marcy, the founder and chairperson of Workers World Party. I’m very proud to be part of Struggle - La Lucha for Socialism newspaper and the Socialist Unity Party, a living expression of Sam Marcy’s revolutionary legacy today.

One of the great Marxist thinkers and fighters of the second half of the 20th century, he did what many thought (and still think) impossible – built a revolutionary cadre organization in the heart of the imperialist empire, directed it toward lifting up the struggles of the most oppressed workers, and helped it maintain a revolutionary communist perspective through some of the greatest setbacks for the working class in the U.S. and around the world.

A gentle, kind man who was implacable with his class enemies and fools who bent to them.

The great continuer of Lenin and Trotsky who kept the red thread of history unbroken from the Russian Revolution to today, when most of the world communist movement succumbed to opportunism of one brand or another, or had to start over practically from scratch. Who welcomed and embraced the rise of other great revolutions and revolutionaries whom dogmatists refused to acknowledge.

We continue his struggle, determined to fight for the victory of the workers and oppressed, for the triumph of socialism and communism.

Sam Marcy, presente!

To appeal to the good will, common sense and even self-interest of the big financiers and industrialists is to expect them to be able to abandon the lucrative profits, exploitation and oppression which are linked to pollution. This is a bankrupt theory, unsuitable in this or any other age.

The history of the environmental struggle shows that relying on the multinational corporations, on the banks, on the insurance companies and on capitalist politicians brings no results.

March 19, 1914: Birth of Comrade Jiang Qing, a leader of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution in socialist China.

“When the imperialists and the reactionaries speak of Jiang Qing as the most hated woman in China, they are merely venting their own hatred of a revolutionary. They pour their venom upon her precisely because she was an unflinching and devoted adherent of the cause of revolutionary communism.”

The Communist Manifesto: A clarion call full of ideas

The Communist Manifesto was first published 175 years ago on Feb. 21, 1848.

Of all the great classics in the treasury of Marxism, The Communist Manifesto unquestionably stands out as the most popular and widely read throughout the world. Bourgeois ideologists, even the most virulent opponents of Marxism, never fail to be astonished by the persistent attraction the Manifesto has for each new generation of revolutionary militants.

Socialist Unity Party honors Sam Marcy

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the death of the noted revolutionary leader, Sam Marcy.

Sam Marcy stressed the need for complete international solidarity with other socialist countries that fell under the military and economic attacks of the imperialist apparatus. He was a strong supporter of the many revolutionary liberation struggles.

Marcy saw the fight against racism and oppression as pivotal to the struggle for socialism. He boldly broke tradition by coming out in support of the early Gay Liberation movement in the U.S. He was the first socialist leader to do this in the early 1970s.

Sam Marcy, a leading Marxist thinker and fighter of the second half of the 20th century, died 25 years ago on Feb. 1, 1998.

Sam Marcy delivered the following statement on May 4, 1994, to a session of the International Seminar of Marxist-Leninist Parties and Organizations in Brussels, Belgium.

What is needed is the broadest united front of revolutionary communist groupings, as long as they adhere to the spirit of revolutionary class struggle as generally promoted by Lenin in his writings on admission to the Communist International.

In the course of further discussion, we will surely find out where we stand and how to continue the struggle for revolutionary Marxism-Leninism in this very difficult period.

The art of revolutionary politics is knowing what to do next. It is okay to theorize about fascism or the strength of the right-wing. But our organization differs from a debating society. We must take a firm, indeed revolutionary, stance.

Individuals can change, but the ruling class’s trend is toward repression, solidifying in the most undemocratic way possible its control over the resources of the country and indeed of the globe. U.S. imperialism is on the march everywhere. The devastating results fall on the backs of the workers at home as well. What do we do?
