Today is the 103rd anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution and the 141st birthday of comrade L.D. Trotsky, one of the revolution’s leaders and the founder of the Soviet Red Army.

“The workers’ state must be taken as it has emerged from the merciless laboratory of history and not as it is imagined by a ‘socialist’ professor, reflectively exploring his nose with his finger. It is the duty of revolutionists to defend every conquest of the working class even though it may he distorted by the pressure of hostile forces. Those who cannot defend old positions will never conquer new ones.”

- Trotsky, In Defense of Marxism (1939/1940)

Throwing door open for oppressed people: Bolshevik Revolution changed the world forever

One-hundred-and-three years ago, on Nov. 7, 1917, workers and peasants overthrew the capitalist government in Russia. The world hasn’t been the same since.

By Stephen Millies

The Bolsheviks fought pogroms with guns in hand. Lenin waged war on racism. He enriched Marxism by teaching that workers in the big capitalist countries had to support revolts in the colonies.

‘Technique of insurrection carries through what politics has not accomplished’

Lenin proposed to raise the insurrection in the days of the Democratic Conference. At the end of September he considered any delay not only dangerous but fatal. “Waiting for the Congress of Soviets,” he wrote at the beginning of October, “is a childish toying with formalities – a shameful toying with formalities, betrayal of the revolution.” It is not likely, however, that anybody among the…

One hundred years after the Great Soviet…
